2x4 Cut List Calculator
Estimate board count, total linear feet, and rough waste from your cut list.
How The Calculator Works
The estimator sorts cuts from longest to shortest and packs them into boards sequentially. It includes kerf between cuts on the same board, then applies your waste factor and rounds up.
Board-foot formula: board feet = (thickness in inches x width in inches x length in feet) / 12.
For a nominal 2x4, the practical size is 1.5 x 3.5 inches. Example: one 8 ft board is (1.5 x 3.5 x 8) / 12 = 3.5 board feet.
FAQ
What algorithm does this calculator use?
The tool uses a greedy packing approach: longest pieces are placed first into available boards, then a waste factor is applied.
Does it include saw kerf?
Yes. Kerf is included between consecutive cuts on the same board. Default kerf is 1/8 inch and can be changed.
How is waste factor applied?
After calculating the base board count, the tool adds a percentage buffer (default 10 percent) and rounds up to a whole board.
Can I use 10 ft or 12 ft boards?
Yes. Choose board length from the dropdown. The estimate updates immediately after recalculation.
Does this replace a full cut optimizer?
No. It is a practical first estimate. For costly builds, always verify final cut sequencing in your shop.
Can I estimate material cost?
Yes. Enter price per board and the calculator will output an estimated board cost.
